Summer Academy
Welcome
Thank you for exploring the exciting options available to you and your student through enrollment in the SFCS Summer Academy 2012. Our goal with Summer Academy is to provide families and students with opportunities to enhance their academic, athletic, and artistic potential while having great summer fun. We look forward to serving your family!
Eligibility
Enrollment in the SFCS Summer Academy is open to children from every school. All programs offered are designed with specific grades in mind; all grades listed refer to the grade that your student will be enrolled in during the 2012-13 school year, often referred to as their rising grade. All three-year-old participants are expected to be potty-trained. All students, including those not enrolled at Shannon Forest, will be subject to all policies and guidelines laid out in the SFCS Parent Student Handbook, which is available at shannonforest.com. No camps will be held the week of July 4.
LOCATION
All camps will be held on the Shannon Forest campus located on Garlington Road, in between Pelham and Woodruff Roads. The 50 acre property of SFCS is designated into two campuses, East and West. The East campus houses all lower school and early childhood programs, while the West campus hosts our upper school and primary athletic fields. Each academy offering has a campus designator which indicates the area where it will take place. Some programs will participate in offsite field trips and parents will be notified in advance of any off-campus activities.
Extended stay
Academy offerings will generally begin at 9AM for morning programs, and afternoon programs will end at 4PM. Supervised early and late stay will be available throughout the eight week program for an additional cost. Prices are listed per week (five consecutive days), but extended stay may be utilized on a daily basis as needed.
EARLY STAY | 7:30 AM—9:00 AM COST | $30/week CAMPUS | EAST
LATE STAY | 4:00 PM—6:00 PM COST | $45/week CAMPUS | EAST
LUNCH & SNACKS
Lunch will not be provided by Shannon Forest and campers are responsible for bringing their own food to campus. Any student below grade 9 who is attending only one half-day program and would like to remain on campus during the designated lunch hour from noon to 1PM must register for our supervised lunch stay. Lunch stay is included for any student attending a full-day program, or two consecutive half-day programs. Prices are listed per week (five consecutive days), but lunch stay is available on a daily basis as needed. Campers are encouraged to pack along healthy snacks each day, though some snacks will be provided. Athletic program participants should also bring along a water bottle.
LUNCH STAY | 12:00 NOON—1:00 PM COST | $25/week CAMPUS | EAST
Class size
The majority of our Academy offerings are designed for smaller enrollment sizes, and we typically strive for a student to teacher ratio of no more than 1:15. Accordingly, each program will fill on a first-come, first-served basis and preferential treatment is offered to currently enrolled SFCS students. Program minimums and maximums will vary, and participants will be notified accordingly upon registration. All offerings are subject to interest and participation.
Registration
Registration for the 2012 SFCS Summer Academy will begin on February 1 for all SFCS students. Open registration will begin on March 1 for all other students. To register, parents must complete a registration and emergency health form for each child, which will be available to SFCS parents through RenWeb ParentsWeb. Parents with students from another school can access these forms on the Shannon Forest homepage at shannonforest.com beginning March 1. All registrations forms should be submitted to Shannon Forest along with payment and follow-up acceptance and scheduling information will be sent home. Should a program be cancelled for any reason, parents will be issued a full refund. If a program has exceeded capacity, parents will be contacted to determine the desired course of action. ABOUT COACH KIRKLAND
Kirkland burst on to the South Carolina football scene as a Clemson University linebacker in 1988 and sacked his way to a member of one of the top defensive teams in Clemson’s history. He was named 1st team All-American in 1991. Kirkland’s impact on Clemson football history was honored in being named to the 1996 Centennial team and his induction into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 2001. Levon was also inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
Following his Clemson career, Kirkland was the 2nd round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1992 NFL draft and became a starter for the Steelers in his second season. Number 99 soon became known on the field for his massive strength, speed and agility; by 1995, Kirkland had been recognized as one of the top, inside linebackers in the NFL.
Kirkland’s NFL career spanned 11 years - nine with the Steelers, and single seasons with the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles. During his career, he was named to the NFL’s 1990s All Decade Team, was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, a two-time Steeler MVP and was named All-Pro in 1996 and 1997. Kirkland was a member of the Steelers’ Super Bowl XXX team that faced the Dallas Cowboys in 1996. He retired from pro-football in 2002. A native of Lamar, South Carolina, Coach Kirkland joined the athletics staff of Shannon Forest Christian School in 2011. He is married to wife Keisha, a WYFF 4 weather anchor, and father to daughter Kennedy, a 2nd grade student at Shannon Forest.

The opportunity that I have been blessed with at Shannon Forest is a dream come true. My passion is to help student athletes to excel, not only on the football field, but off the field as well.
