SFCS Math Team

Twenty-seven Shannon Forest Math Team members competed at the College of Charleston Math Meet on Saturday, February 23. At the meet, students could go against others in computer programming, math, chemistry, and physics. There are written tests for each student on the level of his highest math class. Level I was Algebra II or lower. Those in Pre-calculus were in level II. The Calculus students comprised level III. After the written test there were all day sprints for the team, individual sprints for the students, lectures and physics demonstrations.
There were 686 students from 50 schools and four states in this Southeast regional. Jack Murphy took second place in one of the six individual sprints where 50 or more students are given a problem and start at the same time. The Calculus group of Elisa Auger, Simone Clayton, Amy Galletta, Roderic Maybin, Will Robinson, and Andrew Schwendler finished thirteenth in the state with Andrew having the 46th best score in the state. The Pre-calculus team of Marcus Erwin, Courtney Huggins, Bryce Kerce, Erin McGeachie, Jack Murphy, Jessica Smith, and Philip Van Dyke were also thirteenth in the state with Jack Murphy having the 31st highest score in the state. The team of Angie Culpepper, Lauren Good, Matt Heiser, Peter Heitman, Charlotte Hendricks, Caroline Hendricks, Kevin Miron, Alen Simmons, Thomas Spurgeon, Tim Tate, Bryce Tyson, Brian Van Dyke, Lucas Ward, and Chandler Wavro placed sixth in the state with Thomas Spurgeon having the sixth highest score in the state even though he is in Geometry and competing against Algebra II students. Charlotte Hendricks was 19th, and Caroline Hendricks 26th in the state in scoring.
This is the eleventh year in a row that Shannon Forest Math Team has finished in the top ten in the state at either the University of South Carolina or the College of Charleston Math Meets.
SC State Math Team

The top 150 will compete in Irmo, SC to determine the top 50 who will be competing at Penn State University representing the state of South Carolina. Those nominated are as follows: Caroline Hendricks, A.J. Cranston, Jeff Heiser, Bryce Kerce, Roderic Maybin, Jack Murphy, Andrew Schwendler, Brooke Seppala, Michael Stephens, John Hopkins, Simone Clayton, Elisa Auger, Amy Galletta, Tim Tate, Philip Van Dyke, Thomas Spurgeon, and Peter Heitman.
