C-POD Community Service Program Designed To ...equip and challenge students to influence culture and society for Jesus Christ.

Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) entered the 2009/2010 school year with a fresh look at what it means to equip and challenge students to influence culture and society for Jesus Christ.

The 7th through 12th Grade C-POD Program focus for this year is on courtesy, respect, accountability and "doing hard things." As your teen discusses activities, you will hear some things that are familiar and some things that are new.

Familiar is SFCS' continued emphasis on college preparation. Faculty sponsors will coordinate activities and testing for personality traits, career recommendations, completing job applications effectively, and career planning and writing an effective autobiography.

C-POD service activities connect each grade level with a local, non-profit organization for service activities each quarter. We desire to expose our students to the multiple avenues of outreach opportunities in this community. G.O.W.N. hours can be fulfilled by full-participation in C-POD service activities. In addition, you will find that our seniors have been assigned to C-POD groups to support faculty leaders. Their example and insight will be a benefit to younger Upper School students. Remember, our goal is to team with you to prepare your child not to be of the world, but in the world, confidently taking their faith in Jesus Christ with them as they follow life's path.

Finally, 2009/2010 C-POD leaders will be utilizing a book entitled Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris. Alex and Brett are two west coast teens who embraced the concept that today's teenager suffers from low expectations placed upon them by family, school, church, friends, etc. Throughout the year, C-POD groups will be discussing this concept through the book study guide and we will challenge students to be empowered and rise above the low expectations with which they are often crippled.

It is our hope that every year C-POD will help to lay the collegiate framework and provide challenges for our students to consider in their daily living.

7th through 11th Grades will be partnered with a community service organization in or around Greenville, South Carolina. The students will participate in a minimum of one organized service effort with their partner organization each quarter. SFCS believes it is vitally important for our students to take ownership of their "circle of accountability," or the place where God has put them, and be God's hands and feet in that place. These Grades will spend some time in Bible classes learning about community needs, services, ways to be involved, demographics and the duty of the believer according to God's Word, to better serve those God allows them to serve. Galatians 6:2 commands us to, Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. James 1:27 states, Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

12th Grade will be partnered as "mentors" with 7th through 9th Grade students. Each student in 12th Grade will be assigned to a group of students. They will assist the faculty in supervision, leadership, and motivating the younger students. The seniors will be expected to live out the verse found in I Corinthians 1:11, Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

2009/2010 C-POD Program To Benefit Local, Non-Profit Organizations
The article on the Upper School C-POD Program on the cover referred to the program offering support to several, local, non-profit organizations. Listed below are the organizations that will benefit t from our students' efforts in this importantprogram.

11th Grade will volunteer at Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) is a nationwide effort to fight homelessness. The mission of IHN (Family Promise) is...to provide hospitality to homeless families through accountable interfaith communities. The Mission of the Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) is to assist local congregations to share hospitality (in the form of emergency food and lodging) with homeless families, and to help those families achieve self-sufficiency and self-fulfillment.

11th Grade Group B will volunteer at Pendleton Place Children's Shelter
This organization serves abused and neglected children and youth by providing protective shelter and developmentally appropriate care in a nurturing environment.

10th Grade will volunteer at Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) is a nationwide effort to fight homelessness. The mission of IHN (Family Promise) is...to provide hospitality to homeless families through accountable interfaith communities. The Mission of the Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) is to assist local congregations to share hospitality (in the form of emergency food and lodging) with homeless families, and to help those families achieve self-sufficiency and self-fulfillment.

9th Grade will volunteer at Safe Harbor
Safe Harbor is supported in large part by Hope Chest, the agency's resale store, located at 2111-J North Pleasantburg Drive in Foothills plaza on the corner of Pleasantburg and Rutherford Road. Safe Harbor's clients "shop" at Hope Chest cost-free for themselves and their children, because many are forced to leave their homes with only the clothing on their backs. Items not needed by clients are resold; all profits are then used to support our domestic violence shelters. Hope Chest is currently in dire need of community support in the form of hands-on volunteer work. Volunteers may come as individuals, in groups, for one hour, or for entire days. Volunteers may also get involved directly at the shelter following a three-hour volunteer training and application process.
AND
Miracle Hill Children's Home

Miracle Hill Children' Home continues to be known as a place of refuge for children from birth to age 18. The children's home was founded in 1958 to care for unwanted, troubled, neglected and abused children who had no place to stay. Of the children we serve, some are born addicted to drugs. Others experience anger and frustration when dealing with issues and problems in their lives. Every day, we offer crisis and long-term care, as well as foster care licensing. In home-style environments with house parents, children in our care receive personal counseling, food, shelter, education, discipline and unconditional love – all within a Christian framework.

8th Grade will volunteer at Diligent Hands, Gracious Hearts
Diligent Hands...Gracious Hearts is a nondenominational, Christian ministry providing free basic home/lawn maintenance and fellowship to elderly/handicapped citizens in the Greenville area. It is our objective to meet many of the home ownership needs that arise for these individuals with the purpose of sharing God's love.

7th Grade will volunteer at Miracle Hill Boys' Shelter
Miracle Hill Boys' Shelter was established to care for at-risk, abused and neglected boys. The goal of the shelter is to provide a safe haven and a stable, loving environment to boys transitioning to their next placement or back to their homes. Provided there is an opening, Miracle Hill does not turn any boy away unless he is suicidal, homicidal or psychotic. Besides these three criteria, no boy is considered too "bad" to be welcomed as part of our family. While in our care, boys are able to learn structure and discipline. They will also benefit from an in-house school as well as the unconditional love of staff and dedicated volunteers.
