bookTake the Million Minute Summer Reading Challenge!

This summer help your student take the Million Minute Challenge! We are challenging students, families, staff and faculty of Shannon Forest Christian School to read 1 million minutes by the end of summer. Students enrolled in Grades PK3-12 for the 2011-2012 school year may participate in the challenge.

How do we reach the goal?

Each student is encouraged to read (or be read to) at least 30 minutes a day during the summer months. Fill in the attached reading log and return to your child's homeroom teacher by Monday, August 22, 2011.

Lower School and Upper School students who meet their individual goal will receive a special dress down day during the month of September.

Additional copies of the reading log may be downloaded from the school website.

If we reach our school wide goal?

In keeping with Crusader school spirit Mr. Collins will dye his beard GREEN!

Why participate in summer reading?

Studies have shown that students who do not read during the summer tend to lose reading development while those who do read gain in reading ability.*

How can I encourage my student to read over the summer?

  • Develop good reading habits by setting aside time every day to read.
  • Visit your local library on a regular basis.
  • Keep a book on hand in the car.
  • Set a good example by modeling reading.
  • Extend bedtime only for reading.
  • Get your student interested in a series –if the first book is a hit the others will be too!
  • Let your student have input in what he/she would like to read.
  • Make the reading process FUN!
