September 1, 2010 - The Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) Varsity Boys Soccer team won an important 1A non-conference game this past week 2-1 over Davidson Day School (DDS). The Crusaders started the game very slow and DDS took advantage scoring the early goal. The goal gave Davidson Day even more motivation and they continued to put pressure on the defense. After weathering the attack, the Crusaders were able to keep the ball on their offensive side of the field and finally scored the equalizer. Kooper Buchanan stole the ball from the last defender and sprinted in one-on-one blasting a low shot past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1. In the second half, SFCS kept the intensity level up and got a number of breakaways, but could not find the net. With the clock running down and players cramping up, the Crusaders were able to dig deep and come up with a goal. Peter Heitman stole the ball from a defender, dribbled past two players, and curled a shot around the keeper to score his first Varsity goal and the game winner. "Today was not the greatest game we have ever played," said Head Coach Scott Simmons. "Collectively, as a team, we did not do well with some fundamentals," added Simmons. "I am proud of the guys for showing they have the heart and determination to overcome poor performances and find a way to win." The Crusaders will host the Asheville Trailblazers on Thursday, September 2 at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, September 3, they will open up conference play with a 5:00 p.m. road game at Asheville School.
