SFCS Middle School Girls Finish A Tough Season
February 25 , 2008 - On Monday February 12, the Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) Middle School Girls’ Basketball team traveled to play the Lions of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Lady Crusaders were sluggish on defense in first half and the Lions took a 15 to 0 lead midway thru the second quarter. Playing full court man-to-man, SFCS clawed their way back into the game, allowing only six points to be scored in the second half. Outstanding one on one defense by Angie Culpepper shut down the Lions top scorer who had 10 points in the first half and 0 points in the second. Brittany Moubray and Brook Irvin made several keys steals that brought the score to 22 for SFCS and 23 for the Lions. Shots by Culpepper, Moubray, Sadie Connor and Irvin went deep in the bucket, but popped back out. Finally, with 8 seconds left, Moubray made a steal at the top of the key and a long pass to a wide open Alycia Brady, but it wasn't meant to be as time ran out.
“That second half was the best basketball the girls played all year,” commented SFCS Coach Scott Stephens. “I wished we had played more games with that intensity,” he added. The final score was the Lions 23 – Lady Crusaders 22. Leading scorers were Irvin with 10 points, Connor with 4 points and Moubray with 3 points. SFCS finished 3 and 11 for the season. All three wins were against conference teams. “It was a good season, but a very hard season and I will miss all the 8th Grade players, especially Angie and Brittany who I’ve coached for the last two years,” said Stephens. “I hope to see all of the 8th Grade girls on the Varsity team next year and I look forward to next season with Brook, Sadie and Laura Hipps returning. My thanks to all the players and parents for their hard work and dedication and look forward to next year.”
