SFCS Middle School Girls’ Soccer Team Ends Season With Excellent Tournament
May 21, 2008 - The Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) Girls’ Middle School Soccer Team finished the season with an excellent showing at the CMSC Tournament. On Thursday, May 8, the Crusaders faced a very tough Mitchell Road (MRCA) squad playing on their home turf as host of the tournament. MRCA had previously beaten SFCS three times this season by a combined score of 14-0. The Crusaders showed that they had worked hard and greatly improved over the season. With 4 minutes remaining in the first half, SFCS was awarded a penalty kick after Rachel Graham was tripped up just inside of the penalty box. The MRCA goalkeeper made an excellent save, just tipping the ball over the crossbar. At halftime, the score remained a 0-0 tie. For most of the second half, the score remained tied 0-0. With 6 minutes remaining, the MRCA Eagles were able to tap in a loose ball following a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead. Sadie Connor played the entire game in goal and recorded 30+ saves in what was only her second game playing goalkeeper - EVER - a truly awesome performance! “The game ended with every Lady Crusader knowing they had given it their all; with every head held high and every face beaming with pride,” remarked SFCS Head Coach Craig Wilson. “The girls’ all played an excellent game and I am very proud of them,” he added.
On Friday, May 9, SFCS faced Spartanburg Day in the consolation game. The Crusaders came out ready and were dominant for most of the game. After providing constant offensive pressure, SFCS was finally able to score in the 23 minute. Charlotte Hendricks slotted a ball through to the left side and Graham beat the goalie to the ball and put it in the back of the net. At the half, the Crusaders were up 1-0. The only question remaining was whether or not SFCS would score again. The Crusader defense played very well and Spartanburg Day only had 4 shots on goal for the game. Conner had the shutout in goal and the Lady Crusaders took home the 1-0 win. At the Tournament awards ceremony, SFCS was awarded the Third Place Trophy. Brook Irvin and Heather Breisch were awarded as members of the All-Conference team.
“I would like to thank everyone who was part of our success this season,” added Wilson.
