SFCS Women’s Soccer Team Finishes Season As Conference Champions!

May 15, 2008 - The Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) Varsity Women’s Soccer team finished off a very successful season this past week. On Tuesday, May 6, the Lady Crusaders tied Rabun Gap 1-1. Katie Harrell made the only goal for the team. On Saturday, May 11, the team hosted O’Neal School in the first round of the NCISAA State Playoffs. Unfortunately, the Lady Crusaders were knocked out of the playoffs with a score of 3-0. “We never really got any offense started and O’Neal took advantage of that,” commented SFCS Head Coach Scott Simmons. “We really missed our mid-center player Catherine Funk in the game,” continued Simmons. “She is the one to start the offense and distribute balls to our forwards.” Even though the Lady Crusaders ended their season earlier than they wanted, they still had a very successful year. The team finished the season 9-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in CAA play. Their conference record was good enough to give the team the CAA Conference Championship beating out two 3A schools for the title. It was also the first outright conference title for the SFCS Women’s Soccer team in the school’s history. The team also had three players selected to the CAA All-Conference team – Katie Harrell, Kellie Douglas and Catherine Funk - with two of them just a few votes short for player of the year honors. “I am really proud of how this team played this season,” said Simmons. “We had a very young but talented group of players and at the first of the year I would have never guessed that we would have done as well as we did. I knew we would be competitive in the conference and win some games but never would have thought about a conference championship.” “These girls just found ways to win all year which is evident by all of our close scores,” concluded Simmons. The Lady Crusaders are losing only two players to graduation with the rest of the team coming back next season. The team will also welcome two or three Middle School players who will be moving up for what looks to be a very promising season.
