SFCS juniors Thomas Spurgeon and Brian Van Dyke attended the 2010 National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security (NYLF/NS) in Washington, DC from Tuesday, February 23, to Sunday, February 28. The conference is attended by outstanding students from across the United States who were nominated by their teachers. Spurgeon and Van Dyke were nominated by Alvin Sell.

During the forum that is based on actual world events, the students explored American diplomacy, intelligence and defense during the intensive, six-day conference that blends hands-on experience with instruction in practical leadership skills. Specific activities included the exploration of ethics in national security – in particular regarding nuclear weapons, an actual simulation where the students took on rolls in a fictional, nuclear weapons crisis and the development of an effective response strategy and the attendance of seminars and discussions about key issues currently confronting our national security community.

Spurgeon and Van Dyke also toured the U.S. Capitol Building, Library of Congress, House and Senate offices, Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Washington, DC memorials and museums.

Founded in 1992, the National Youth Leadership Forum is an educational organization established to help prepare extraordinary young people for their professional careers. The result of this experience will no doubt enhance and nourish the leadership skills of these talented students.

SFCS Welcomes New President

Bob_CollinsSFCS is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Bob Collins as President of Shannon Forest Christian School. Mr. Collins will be assuming oversight of all school operations effective March 1, 2010. This is in no way a reflection on Brenda Hillman and the wonderful job she does for us as Head of School. As noted in the February 1st letter the School Board simply realizes we have asked too much of Brenda and no one person can run the school's academic program and give the proper time to fundraising, finance and business operations. We feel this addition is an integral part of helping the school to prosper and build healthier business operations.

Bob comes to SFCS with a plethora of business, finance, ministry and fundraising expertise. A collaborator and team builder, Mr. Collins brings not only a much needed business background to the school; he also brings educational experience and a visible passion for Christian service. Constituents of SFCS will be provided opportunities in March to meet Bob and hear his heart for the school. We are sure you will find him engaging, energetic and knowledgeable in the areas mentioned above.

The SFCS School Board is pleased to welcome Bob and his wife Millie to our school family and anticipate the Lord using Bob in a great way at Shannon Forest.

Please continue in fervent prayer for the school and its leadership as we engage in a proactive, forward thinking, positive direction for SFCS. With God's Blessing, we are enthusiastic and excited about our school's future.

In His Service and Yours,

School Board
Shannon Forest Christian School
