Math
The Math Department at Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) is formulated to build a foundation in Math in students that will prepare them for acceptance to the college of their choice through high classroom grades and SAT scores. This goal continues after graduation as students are also prepared to succeed when enrolled in college.
Students participate in numerous Math competitions throughout the year. The teams are as follows:
- Varsity - 9th through 12th Grade students
- Junior Varsity - 7th and 8th Grade students
- Math Counts – 6th, 7th or 8th Grade students
2011 Math Team Results:
USC Tournament (February 5th, 2011)
- Students who participated: Samuel Glenn (9th grade), Ashley McGovern (10th grade), Philip Shu (12th grade) and Thomas Spurgeon (12th grade).
- SFCS placed 9th in the state for all A-AA Public Schools and all private schools
- The Ciphering Team (Ashley McGovern, Thomas Spurgeon, and Philip Shu) placed 7th in the state
Mathcounts Competition at Clemson University (February 12th, 2011)
- Students who participated: Delayne Nickles (7th grade), Tara Burress (7th grade), Bruce Coffey (8th grade), Tristein Singleton (8th grade)
- SFCS placed 12th in the piedmont region (1 of 3 regions in the state)
- Delayne Nickles was lead scorer for SFCS
College of Charleston Tournament (February 26th, 2011)
- Students who participated: Philip Shu (12th grade), Brian Van Dyke (12th grade), Thomas Spurgeon (12th grade), Peter Heitman (12th grade), Adam Favors (12th grade), Eli Wilson (10th grade), Clay Young (10th grade), Greg Van Dyke (10th grade), Ashley McGovern (10th grade), Emma Kate Pearson (10th grade), Rachel Graham (10th grade), Samuel Glenn (9th grade), Elizabeth Ellis (9th grade).
- Special Recognition: Philip Shu received 2nd place in the "A-chording" timed sprint
- The math team from Shannon Forest Christian School competed February 26 at the College of Charleston Math Meet against 49 other schools from four states. The schools were the best from private schools and all public schools in levels IA through 5A in size. The Algebra II team of Ashley Mc Govern, Elizabeth Ellis, Eli Wilson, Greg Van Dyke, Rachel Graham, Samuel Glenn, Clay young, and Emma Kate Pearson placed 7th in the state out of 20 South Carolina schools. Ashley McGovern's score was 28th individually in the state with Elizabeth Ellis 31th place finish.
The AP Calculus team of Philip Shu, Brian Van Dyke, Peter Heitman, Adam Favors, and Thomas Spurgeon were 14th in the state out of 22 schools in that category and 225 students. Philip Shu's score was 32nd in South Carolina. Philip also received a medal for placing second in an individual math sprint out of all 609 students. - The Math Brainstorming team of Thomas Spurgeon, Brian Van Dyke, Peter Heitman, and Philip Shu finished 4th out of 50 teams from four states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee for a very impressive showing. Parents should be very proud of all these students from Shannon due to the competition the team was against were teams like NC School for Math and Science, Charlotte Math Club, AC Flora, Spring Valley, Daniel, and Academic Magnet High School of Charleston.

Math Team Records Impressive Showing at College of Charleston Math Meet
The Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) Math team recently competed at the College of Charleston Math Meet against 49 other schools from four states. The schools were the best from private schools and all public schools in levels IA through 5A in size.
The Math Brainstorming team of Thomas Spurgeon, Brian Van Dyke, Peter Heitman and Philip Shu finished 4th out of 50 teams from four states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee for a very impressive showing. The SFCS team competed against North Carolina School for Math and Science, Charlotte Math Club, Asheville Christian Flora, Spring Valley, Daniel and Academic Magnet High School of Charleston.
Out of 225 South Carolina students, Shannon's Philip Shu scored 32nd in AP Calculus. Shu also received a medal for placing 2nd in an individual Math sprint out of all 609 students
The SFCS Algebra II team of Ashley Mc Govern, Elizabeth Ellis, Eli Wilson, Greg Van Dyke, Rachel Graham, Samuel Glenn, Clay young and Emma Kate Pearson placed 7th in the state out of 20 South Carolina schools.
