efforts of Jean Carter who worked hard all day
keeping the golfers and caddies

“A cloud by day” protected the children
of Israel during their journey through the wilderness
long ago. God also protected our volunteer golfer’s
last Thursday, May 13, with the same cloud cover as
each one of them completed 100 holes to raise funds
for Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS). “The
weather was terrific, but the level of fellowship and
enthusiasm toward this wonderful cause was even greater,” said
Headmaster Doug McLaughlin who was assisted by his
caddy Tyler Weekley.
Twenty-two golfers and their caddies
secured sponsors to raise over $29,000 at this year’s
event. Leading the way this year and dethroning last
year’s top fundraiser, School Board member Kip
Miller, was Josh Seppala and his caddy Brooke Seppala.
When asked the secret that brought him to the top spot,
Seppala said, “It was the personal touch. I made
phone calls to individuals and challenged them to join
me in this important ministry to our children.” Being
in the top spot gave Seppala the first pick of all
the wonderful prizes provided by company sponsors.
Even after completing 100 holes that day, Seppala wasn’t
discouraged from wanting more golf! As his prize, Seppala
picked the VIP pass for four to play any of the Cliff’s
Community courses.
Miller came in second and vows to
regain his title next year! He was joined by his son
Derrick. The third place spot was also an upset when
a check for $1000 came in for SFCS Athletic Director,
Rita Harrell just moments before the marathon began.
The advice that Harrell gives on a daily basis to the
athletes of SFCS rang true, “never, ever, give
up!” Each of the golfers walked away not only
with great prizes and sore muscles, they went home
with the satisfaction one receives from giving of themselves
for the cause of Christ.
Thank you to all of the golfers,
as well as our sponsors, prize contributors and hole
sponsors! A special thank you goes out to SFCS PTF
president Lynn Price, Melanie Boccio and Jean Carter
for all their terrific work in making this event
a great success.

SFCS Grand Prize Winners of
the “ Wheaties State
Champion Poster Contest!”
Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) has placed
on physical fitness has taken the school all the way
to a featured spot on the famous “ Wheaties” cereal
box! A photo of a group of SFCS Presidential Fitness
Test winners and a poster, designed by a SFCS student,
will be featured on a personalized “Wheaties” box.
The school will also receive a $5,000 grant for Physical
Education activities for being the Grand Prize Winner
of the “ Wheaties State Champion Poster Contest.” SFCS
Athletic Director, Rita Harrell was recently contacted
by The President’s Council on Physical Fitness
and Sports (PCPFS) and General Mills to enter our school
in the contest. With little time left before the deadline,
Harrell and Art teacher, Mr. Mark Mulfinger, organized
several students to quickly design and complete posters
that reflected the theme, “ways to maintain a
healthy and active lifestyle.” One poster, designed
by 5th Grade students, Jonathan and Joseph Jacobs,
was selected to be sent to General Mills to represent
our school. The entry from SFCS was selected as the
To be eligible to enter the contest, schools had to
be recognized by the PCPFS as one of the 150 President’s
Challenge “State Champion” schools for
the 2002- 2003 school year. Not only does SFCS proudly
hold this honor for three years in a row, we are also
a PCPFS Physical Activity and Fitness Demonstration
Center. Congratulations to all who participated not
only in this contest, but in this year’s Presidential
Physical Fitness Test.
Don’t Miss It...The Encore
Performance of Friends, Romans, and Country Folk!
If Mother’s Day celebrations kept you from attending
the performance of the Upper School drama, Friends,
Romans, and Country folk last weekend, now you have
another chance!
Tickets may be purchased at the door
for $5.00 for students and $7.00 for adults. Anyone
who attended the performance on Thursday, May 6, will
be admitted free of charge.
SFCS Drama teacher, Brenda
Stephens recalled how this original production got
its start. Approximately a year ago Alvin Sell shared
with me his vision of writing a play for my Upper School
Drama students to perform. Alvin had written a book
Forever Learning and I knew the play would be just
as intriguing. What he created is truly remarkable.
The characters in this witty comedy range from a high
class British college student to a country fire fighter
from Rome, Georgia. The dialogue is cleverly written
so that each character’s persona comes through
and of course, there is the wit and comedy that we
have come to expect in Sell’s plays. The plot
appears simple on the surface level, but there are
deeper concepts that permeate throughout the play.
People who have seen the play twice, have commented
on parts of the play that they missed on the first
viewing.”
“ Watching our students make
Friends, Romans, and Country folk come alive before
my eyes was one of the greatest experiences of my life,
remarked playwright and SFCS teacher, Alvin Sell. “The
play was as well acted as anything I’ve ever
seen young people perform. They truly nailed the characters
and gave a performance that drew the audience in from
start to finish. People who didn’t get a chance
to come really missed something special.” “I’m
so glad that we will all have a chance to see it again
or for the first time,” added Sell. “I
hope many people will come out and support our students.
The work that has gone into this production is incredible.
Come out Monday night and bring someone with you. I
promise you won’t be disappointed.”
Mark
Ray will be videotaping the show and tapes may be
ordered for $20.00 each. A CD-rom with photos of the
cast,
crew and live shots taken during the show, may be
purchased at the play for $5.00 each.
