SFCS...Sharing & Caring

HEADLINE STORY

Dear
Friends:
The tragedy that was Katrina has forever altered the
lives of many of our brothers and sisters in the gulf.
I find Matthew 22:37-40 to be very appropriate for this
sad time: ".Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind. This
is the first and greatest commandment. And the second
is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the
Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments." It
is impossible to avoid being emotionally moved by the
anguish we have seen the past few days on the faces
of those who have lost so many of their worldly possessions.
Amidst the despair, I have been inspired and encouraged
by the swift response of Americans providing aid to
the devastated areas in Louisiana , Alabama and Mississippi
. Local organizations began responding to the crisis
almost immediately and to validate our commitment to
sharing SFCS with the Greenville community, our school
began organizing its response.
*SFCS parent Carrie Howard teamed with the Key Club
and Lower School to begin a shoebox drive for students
in PK3 through 12 th Grade. The boxes will be shrink
wrapped and in coordination with the American Red Cross,
AAA Cooper Freight will haul them South. *Each shoe
box is being turned in with a $1 donation and combined
with the Upper School students' $1 payment per day to
wear t-shirts program. An immediate cash donation is
being made to the American Red Cross as a result of
this effort.
* Upper School faculty member Matt Harmless is leaving
shortly to drive a semi truck down for a quick turn-around
to take much needed supplies from several local churches.
 |
SFCS students put together a total
of 356
shoeboxes filled with toiletries, small gifts, Bibles
and other much needed items. 300 of the boxes were
shipped to Baton Rouge and 56 went directly into
the hands of Red Cross workers at the Palmetto Expo
Center in Greenville. |
*The Palmetto Expo Center (Help Line 1-866-313-0081)
will be welcoming displaced families in the near future.
Due to our school connection through the center's General
Manager John Wilusz, SFCS students and SFPC students
stepped to the plate immediately, setting up cots, moving
chairs and providing assistance with much-needed preparation
details.
This tragedy is a stark reminder of how many people
in our world are in need. It is an opportunity to remind
our children regarding the need to be appreciative for
the standard of living for which they have been provided.
As the country pulls together, the opportunities for
prayer, giving and service will continue over many months
and Shannon Forest Christian School students will be
encouraged to strategically be a part of a long-term
response to this natural disaster.
In His Service,
Brenda Hillman
Acting Head of School
