President's Council On Physical Fitness And Sports
Names SFCS State Champions

For the fifth year in a row, Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) has been named the South Carolina Physical Fitness Champions of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS). Achieving this honor is proof positive that our school is committed to addressing and overcoming the ever-growing epidemic of childhood physical inactivity and obesity. 'The earlier our children begin a regular routine of physical activity and fitness, the better,' said SFCS Athletic Director Rita Harrell. According to the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, overweight children are more likely than children of normal weight to become overweight or obese adults and are therefore at higher risk for associated adult health problems. Our students are currently preparing for the 2005-2006 fitness tests and are looking forward to raising the bar to a higher level of performance. Harrell stresses that, 'this is not a skills test.' 'It is a test of drive and discipline. With practice and effort, all students are capable of achieving a passing score.' Once again, SFCS will proudly display its State Champion certificate and will look forward to a successful year in this prestigious program.

Enhancing the Learning Experience

Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) has traditionally encouraged our students to have a broad exposure to different learning environments. The transporting of students and athletes is a piece of the puzzle that is put together each year to balance the enhancement of the curriculum and the safety of our students. The Lord's protection has been upon our travel through the years, but last week's event in Early Childhood was a clear indication that unforeseen events, 'accidents', can occur during transportation to and from field trip activities. While continuing to thank the Lord for His hand of protection, Mrs. Neely and myself have engaged in ongoing discussion regarding our commitment of placing the safety of our students at the forefront
when enhancing the curriculum through outside activities.

For clarification regarding 2005-2006 guidelines:
1. The preferred mode of transportation on field trips is commercial vehicles.
Availability of buses, length of trip, cost factors, etc. will be considered when
engaging bids from bus companies.
2. Utilization of the school buses for short trips will be fully explored.
3. Transportation of students in private cars will be limited:
*Parents must be fully aware that upon allowing passengers in their vehicle they assume the liability for the safe transportation of those students.
*Parents will be encouraged to make arrangements to transport their own child.
*Field Trip Permission forms will be required to reflect specific permission for
their child to ride with another parent.
Thank you for your prayers and support as we continue to explore the issues surrounding enhancing the learning experience of our students.

In His Service,
Brenda Hillman
