Improvements to Lower School Computer Lab Up & Running!

HEADLINE STORY
Friday, December 3rd, 2004

SFCS 3rd Grade Student Carrie McGeachie

Learning computer skills has become a critical part of educating children and it’s never too early to begin! Thanks to the SFCS Parent/Teacher Fellowship (PTF), the old and VERY tired Lower School Computer Lab has been updated to a bustling learning center featuring ten new computers and a host of educational software programs. At a recent PTF Board meeting, a vote was passed to provide the funds that purchased the computers (equivalent to the Pentium 4) that were built by an associate of our SFCS computer wiz, West Goewey. New keyboards, mice and a new dual processor server were also purchased, resulting in a fully functional, fun-filled Lab. “Computer Lab is fun again!,” says Lower School Computer teacher, Sandra Whiting. “The PTF has truly answered a prayer,” she added. “I had been praying for over a year for an improvement in the computers for my students. We were sharing computers for the 1st Grade students and had only one or two software programs that were on their level. Now EVERYONE gets their own computer and we have many software choices for each grade level. God truly answers prayers!” exclaimed Whiting.

The new computers will impact the Lower School Computer Program in many ways. All the computers now have the same software and have been upgraded to Windows 2000. Students have access to standard Windows programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as access to the Internet. All computers have printing capabilities and students may now save their work to disks for projects that take longer than one class. Each computer now houses 30 software programs including the fun and creative Kids Pix Deluxe 3.

“The computers will be a tremendous addition,” commented Headmaster Doug McLaughlin. “ We have some wonderful educational software that we were not able to use on the old computers,” he added. “Now every student will be able to work independently with software chosen to meet their specific skill level and that will address particular educational needs.” Special thanks to the PTF and West Goewey for the hard work that made this improvement possible!

2nd Grade Classes Study History and Celebrate Christmas

The 2nd Grade classes of Becky Eaton and Kim Maund recently completed a study of what it was like to live during the 1600s to 1700s. Students drew a fabulous mural of the original Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts, wrote stories about life in the plantation and made hornbooks – the type of reading books used in that period. Classes will also take a field trip on Friday, December 10, to see the Hyatt Festival of Trees. Students will see the tree they helped to decorate and take a scavenger hunt to find out special things about each tree. The 2nd Grade Christmas outreach project was to make shoeboxes filled with gifts for Operation Christmas Child. The children enjoyed buying toys for children in war torn areas of the world and read a book about Samaritan’s Purse written by Franklin Graham.

1st Grades Reach Out at Christmas

The 1st Grade classes of Julie Sellars and Molly Spurgeon will take a field trip to the Ronald McDonald House on Friday, December 10. Students will deliver pantry goods collected as their Christmas outreach project. They will also tour the house and hear the history of this wonderful charity. Then, it’s off to the Hyatt Festival of Trees where students will enjoy the SFCS tree and take part in an ornament scavenger hunt among all of the trees on display. The trip will end with a fellowship lunch at Fuddruckers.

The 1st and 2nd Grade students will give a special “sneak preview” of their Christmas program, Angels Alert during the weekly chapel on Wednesday, December 8, at 9:00 a.m.
