The Lower School…
LOWER SCHOOL NEWS
Friday, January 6th, 2006
It is hard to
believe that we
are halfway
through this
school year. We
have many exciting things to look
forward to during the second half of
the year. I again welcome all
Lower School parents to a parent
coffee on Tuesday, January 31, in
Room 102. This is a nice
opportunity to pray together for our
school and to bring questions,
comments, or concerns. I look
forward to meeting with you.
While the ice storm attempted to
'cool' our Christmas celebration,
the warm hearts and voices of our
1st and 2nd Grade students will not
be stilled. Our post-Christmas
musical will be presented on
Tuesday, January 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Please mark your calendars and
plan to attend the Shannon Forest
Christmas in Reverse musical.
We are gearing up for next year's enrollment with an Open
House on Tuesday, January 17. If
you know anyone who is interested
in learning more about SFCS, let us
know and we will be happy to send
them an invitation. Anyone
interested in our Early Childhood
Program - PK3 through
Kindergarten is welcome to attend
one of the informational sessions at
10:00 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. Parents
interested in 1st through 12th Grades
at Shannon are welcomed to come
anytime between 1:00 p.m. to 6:00
p.m.
Get ready for 'Far-out Fridays.'
A little Friday fun will help us get
through the cool winter weather.
Mark your calendars for the
following:
• Friday, January 13:
Slipper Day - Lower School students may wear their slippers to
school (please wear shoes to and
from school, and for PE and recess)
• Friday, January 20:
Crazy Hat Day - Wear a wild and
wacky hat or sport your favorite
team hat
• Friday, January 27:
Green and White Day - Wear green and white to show Shannon
Forest colors
• Friday, February 3:
Super Bowl Friday -Wear the color of your preferred super bowl
team and bring a canned good for
our 'Souper Bowl' collection for a
local food pantry.
May the New Year hold a store of blessings for you and your family.

Christmas Program
Rescheduled
The ice storm may have put a
deep freeze on SFCS Christmas
celebrations, but the students in
1st and 2nd Grades will rally in a
rescheduled Christmas program on
Tuesday, January 10! Students
will perform the entertaining
program called Christmas in
Reverse at 7:00 p.m. in the
Shannon Forest Presbyterian
Church Sanctuary.
AR News
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program utilized
by Shannon Forest that improves comprehension. The program
is handled through the computer lab, and is available
and encouraged by the classroom teacher.
Here's how it works: Students check out AR books which
are designated with a yellow tag on the spine and a
sticker on the inside of the front cover. The sticker
tells the reading level of the book and the possible
point value. The child reads the book and then takes
a computer-generated quiz. The students earn points
based on the number of questions answered correctly.
They must answer at least 60% of the questions to pass
the test and earn points.
Each time your child reaches a new level in Accelerated
Reader they will receive a prize for that level. Our
theme this year is "Buggy for Books!" Your child's "bug"
will be placed on our flower garden (located in the
hall outside the computer lab) to indicate the level
they have achieved.
I look forward to a wonderful year of reading. If you
have any questions please feel free to come see me in
the computer lab, email me at swhiting@shannonforest.com
, or give me a call at 678-5186.
