The Lower School…
LOWER SCHOOL NEWS
Saturday, September 10th, 2005
We have passed the initial weeks of school,
a time of renewed excitement for the year ahead. The
Lower School
staff is committed to keeping that excitement alive. Many programs are beginning that motivate students and
keep that enthusiasm high. Accelerated Reader and SEEDS
are programs designed to generate a love of reading
and to increase higher level thinking skills. Math Superstars
will provide a challenging math opportunity for those
critical thinkers. Shannon’s God’s Kids
Choir will be resuming. Watch for details to come home
in your child’s Monday folder.
The greatest challenge that is presented is that of
our chapel theme, growing into the likeness and image
of Christ. Each week we have the opportunity to learn
more about Jesus and how we can become like Him. Chapel
lessons move from discovery to application. We desire
to become “doers of the word.” You are welcomed
to join us for your child’s chapel time. We meet
in the SFPC Sanctuary on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. (PK3-1st
Grades) and at 9:45 a.m. (2nd – 5th Grades). Ask
your child to share some lessons that they have learned.
• God is faithful - expect a miracle
• Storing treasures in Heaven
• Encouraging each other and lifting each other
up
• Goliath – A Bible bully
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive
yourselves. Do what it says.” James 1:22

Train For SEEDS
SFCS students in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are
anxiously awaiting the start of SEEDS – a reading
program that is designed to inspire a love for reading
and a greater understanding of literature. This program
challenges students to think at higher cognitive levels.
Parents from each of these classrooms are needed to
assist.
Please consider attending the SEEDS training with Dr.
Mildred Young on Tuesday, September 20, from 8:30 a.m.
to 9:30 a.m. in the Lower Level Meeting Room A in Building
300 on the Lower School Campus. Once training is completed,
a list of parents will be compiled to conduct SEEDS
sessions with the students.
Accelerated Reader Program Takes Off in Lower School
The theme for this year’s Accelerated Reader
(AR) Program is “Buggy For
Books.” Students will be able to take tests with
teacher permission in their
classrooms, computer classes and during designated open
lab times throughout the school day. Take advantage
of this wonderful opportunity to enhance your child’s
reading skills! For more information, please contact
Sandra Whiting at 678-5119.
AR News
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program utilized
by Shannon Forest that improves comprehension. The program
is handled through the computer lab, and is available
and encouraged by the classroom teacher.
Here's how it works: Students check out AR books which
are designated with a yellow tag on the spine and a
sticker on the inside of the front cover. The sticker
tells the reading level of the book and the possible
point value. The child reads the book and then takes
a computer-generated quiz. The students earn points
based on the number of questions answered correctly.
They must answer at least 60% of the questions to pass
the test and earn points.
Each time your child reaches a new level in Accelerated
Reader they will receive a prize for that level. Our
theme this year is "Buggy for Books!" Your child's "bug"
will be placed on our flower garden (located in the
hall outside the computer lab) to indicate the level
they have achieved.
I look forward to a wonderful year of reading. If you
have any questions please feel free to come see me in
the computer lab, email me at swhiting@shannonforest.com
, or give me a call at 678-5186.

Sandra Whiting
