LOWER SCHOOL NEWS
Saturday, October 7th, 2005

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Grade Level Coffees. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to talk with you in smaller groups. I look forward to the Early Childhood Coffees coming up on Monday, October 17. PK3 and PK4 parents are invited to a coffee at 9:00 a.m. and Kindergarten parents at 1:00 p.m. These will be held in the Lower School Meeting Room, 103 B, on the Lower School Campus. This has been an opportunity for us to pray together, share positive features about Shannon, and discuss any topic that you desire. As I stated in those small group settings, my door is very open to you should you have concerns or praises to share. Please call me, e-mail me, or stop in to see me. I share a favorite scripture from Ephesians that speaks to our unity in Christ. How awesome that although we may have differences in background and churches, we can meet together as one unified body of believers.
'There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope
when you were called - one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and
Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.' Ephesians 4:4-5

Grandparents' Day Reminder!

If your students are to be checked out by a grandparent on Friday, October 14, please remember to turn in the necessary permission slip for that child's release. All grandparents who are currently on file with the school have
been mailed a brochure inviting them to attend the event. If you would like to pick up any extra invitations or if your grandparents are not listed with
the school, additional brochures are available in the Lower and Main School

Offices.

Lower School Chess Club
Playing chess is a great way to develop critical thinking skills while having fun
with friends. If you are skilled and available to run an after-school Chess Club
for 3rd through 5th Grade students, please contact Lower School Administrator
Kathy Neely at 678-5118. We would love to get one started!

Let's Do Lunch!
Beginning in October, Early Childhood children who are dismissed at 11:45 a.m. will have the opportunity to stay for a lunch visit with their friends. Morning students can sign up for lunch by putting their name on the chart outside their classroom door. Opportunities will be limited and may vary by classroom based on the total number of children. There will be a $7.00 fee for
this service, plus the cost of lunch. Children may pack a lunch or purchase from our lunch menu. The menu is located under Lunch Menu below.

Bon Appetite'!

SEEDS Training…
Supporting Early Elementary Developmental Skills
Dr. Mildred Young recently came to the SFCS Lower School campus to share her SEEDS literacy program with our parents. Ten parents participated in this training and will be placed on a volunteer list for teachers to contact for a
SEEDS lesson. If you were previously trained and are available to assist this year, please contact your classroom teacher. We are trying to assess the interest in an evening training session. If you were not able to attend but would like another opportunity, please contact the Lower School Office at 678-5119. Keep in mind that, once trained, you would need to have daytime availability for us to use your services.

AR News

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program utilized by Shannon Forest that improves comprehension. The program is handled through the computer lab, and is available and encouraged by the classroom teacher.

Here's how it works: Students check out AR books which are designated with a yellow tag on the spine and a sticker on the inside of the front cover. The sticker tells the reading level of the book and the possible point value. The child reads the book and then takes a computer-generated quiz. The students earn points based on the number of questions answered correctly. They must answer at least 60% of the questions to pass the test and earn points.

Each time your child reaches a new level in Accelerated Reader they will receive a prize for that level. Our theme this year is "Buggy for Books!" Your child's "bug" will be placed on our flower garden (located in the hall outside the computer lab) to indicate the level they have achieved.

I look forward to a wonderful year of reading. If you have any questions please feel free to come see me in the computer lab, email me at swhiting@shannonforest.com , or give me a call at 678-5186.

In His service,

Sandra Whiting
