During the summer, the Shannon Forest Christian School Board suggested the establishment of a Key Club as a new school activity for Upper School students. The SFCS Key Club was started so that students could get involved and serve their community.

The Club is already hard at work on two different projects. One of the projects is raising money to help the Piedmont Women’s Center. The Piedmont Women’s Center is a haven for women who need a place to help them save their unborn children. A campaign to raise money for the center is flourishing on campus – just look for the big baby bottles in the Upper School Cafeteria. Each grade has an opportunity to raise money for this cause. The grade that raises the most money will win an ice cream party.

The second project that the Key club is working on is called Operation Christmas Child. The goal of this project is to encourage SFCS students to fill empty shoe boxes with various toys and items that will be sent to needy children in foreign countries. These boxes of hope and joy work miracles all over the world!

Here is a list of things for you to put in your shoe boxes:

  • small toys (non-combat in nature)
  • hygiene items (no liquids)
  • hard candies
  • sunglasses
  • ball caps
  • socks
  • t-shirts
  • jewelry
  • other items you feel are appropriate

Think of these thoughts: fill the box with color in that these children live in a black and white world often ravaged by the results of war. Fill the box with something soft and cuddly in that these children often go to sleep in a world that is filled with fear. And, finally, fill the box with love – put a face with the messenger – a simple school picture will do - and a message of Christ’s love. It could be as simple as a note that says, “God loves you and so do I!”

There is also a list of things that you should not put in your shoe box such as, candies that may melt, toy guns and knives, used items, medicines and liquids. If you have any other questions about these projects, Please contact, Ben Van Dyke, Key Club President at 286-6787 or you may also contact Mrs. Holcombe at 678-5165.

The Fall Masquerade “Covers Up” The Rest

by Annah Woodward (9th Grade Student)
Monday, October 27, 2003

Last Saturday night, a big event took place at Shannon Forest Christian School. Some people were leery about the evening’s theme and some thought the idea was pretty cool. The SFCS Student Council encouraged our students to come to the Fall Masquerade...in costume. Surprisingly, almost all students who attended came through and dressed in costumes.

The best-dressed group was awarded to
Dorothy, Scarecrow and Lion – sophomore, Savannah Boccio and juniors, Brandon
Donovan and Chris Tamburro

The wide variety of characters included: Tinkerbell and Peter Pan, characters from the Wizard of Oz (minus the Tin Man), Fred and Wilma Flintstone, a Mexican Bull Rider and many more. The teachers seemed to enjoy the dance as much as the students. Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin even participated in the event.

Senior, Laura Grant commented, “The dance was more than I hoped it would be. So many people came and really put a lot of effort into their costumes. It was fun to dress up and see how creative my classmates were as well.” Sophomore, Tim Wilson felt that the masquerade was more fun than normal dances because we used a different DJ that played really good music.

Whether it was the costumes, the music, the food or everything combined, the Fall Masquerade was a big hit with everyone who attended. It gave students a chance to break away from the “norm” and have fun revealing their different “characters.”
