The Lower School Book Fair Was a PAW-fect Success!
by Maya Sawyers (Freshman Student)
Monday, November 10, 2003
Everyone was invited to attend the SFCS Lower
School Scholastic Book Fair that ran from Monday, October
27th, through Friday, October 31st. The Book Fair offered
a huge selection of best-selling books from students’
favorite authors. Books featured some of our most-loved
characters, easy reading selections, adventure stories
and chapter books.

National Book Week brought
out the “character” in everyone! Cinderella’s
students: Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, The
Cat in the Hat and Winnie the Pooh enjoyed their
favorite books during the celebration of READING! |
The theme for this year’s fair featured the book
Dear Mrs. Larue, by best-selling author, Mark Teague.
Tuesday, October 28th, was family night complete with
games, prizes and refreshments. This was a time of fun
for the whole family with prizes and food. Clifford
the Big Red Dog even showed up for the younger children’s
enjoyment. On this night alone, SFCS sold over $1,000
in books. “It was neat seeing all the families
come in and support the school,” said Mrs. Sandra
Whiting. Overall, the SFCS Lower School Book Fair sold
about $6,900 in books. The money will be used to buy
books for the Lower School Library and Classrooms.
Lower School Art Program
by Katie Thackston (Freshman Student)
Monday, November 10, 2003
Art is defined as the “use of skill and creative
imagination to produce works.” In our Lower School
there are approximately 180 students who take Art in
K5 through the 3rd Grades. At SFCS all four areas of
Art curriculum are emphasized: perceptual skills, Art
production, history and analysis. The Art
Program has grown considerably. A few years ago, teachers
rolled carts to the classrooms. Now the Art Classroom
has computers, books, appreciation games and puzzles
as well as many fine posters. These areas all work together
to reinforce and broaden students’ response and
self-expression and their knowledge and understanding.
A teacher who helps make this excellent program possible
is Mrs. Reida Pearson. She has been involved in Art
since she was about eight-years old. As a young girl,
Pearson said that her mother was a huge inspiration.
She put her in classes at a young age and made sure
she stayed involved. Now, Pearson shares that inspiration
with our students.
Presently, Pearson’s Kindergarten students are
studying color theory by mixing finger paints to create
secondary colors. The 1st Grade classes are learning
about elements, such as lines and forms. A recent project
for the 2nd Grade was creating a piece using corn and
pointillism, which is the theory of applying small dots
of color to a surface so that from a distance they blend
together. The 3rd Grade is looking in to collage with
Romare Bearden, a famous artist, as one of the focal
points. “The SFCS Lower School Art Program is
the finest I have ever encountered on the elementary
level,” says Joyce Stocks, SFCS Lower School Administrator.
“Mrs. Pearson not only teaches Art Theory and
Technique, but Art Appreciation and History. She provides
an incredible experience for our students.”

Each week the Crusader Communiquè features a
new member of our 2003-2004 faculty. This week we welcome
Mrs. Molly Scott to SFCS. Scott teaches Elementary Computer
to the 4th and 5th Grades, 6th Grade Computer, Keyboarding
to the PSAT Study Skills 7th Grade students, Computer

in Distance Learning and Web Publishing from Texas A&M
University and two Certificates from Achieve Global

Scott has taught Computer Software in an industry or
college level environment for ten years. From 1997 to
2001 she ran her own business writing technical manuals
and developing internal training programs for the JCPenney
Company. During that time, she developed JCPenney’s
Distance Learning Program where all Word, Excel, PowerPoint
and Introduction to the PC classes were broadcast over
JCPenney’s internal television network. 1500 students
attended her first Excel broadcast! Prior to coming
to SFCS, Scott worked as the Corporate Education Manager
for Kyrus Corporation in Taylors, South Carolina.
Scott’s husband Mark is a National Account Sales
Rep for Vanity Fair Corporation out of Greensboro, North
Carolina. They have two children at SFCS, Jake is in
the 8th Grade and Travis attends 4th Grade. Scott is
currently attending classes at Greenville Technical
College to obtain her A+ certification. The A+ certification
masters the computer’s hardware and operating
system software. Her goal is to offer this training
to SFCS students in the future. “I am certainly
here by God’s grace,” said Scott. “The
job listing for my position was on the school’s
web site when I checked to see the date for first day
of school! I am really enjoying being part of the ‘Big
Green Rumble.’”
