UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Monday, February 23, 2004

Last year, 86 members of the SFCS family experienced a wonderful time of service, fellowship and fun in Cherokee, North Carolina as participants in the Cherokee Mission Trip. Services that were provided during the trip included:

  • Bible school each day for over 50 Indian children
  • Providing a worship service at Tsali Care on Sunday
  • Daily craft activities and visitation at Tsali Care
  • Daily craft activities and visitation at Tsali Manor
  • Puppet ministry at Tsali Care and Bible school
  • Painting at the tribal headquarters
  • Painting at a battered women’s shelter
  • Construction of a handicapped ramp
  • Construction of a deck
  • Repairs to the eaves and overhangs of an elderly person’s home
  • Installation of guttering on the home of an elderly person

In addition to the hard work, the team also had time for worship each night and participated in many fun activities. This summer’s trip is schedule for Saturday, July 24 – Saturday, July 31.

“Seeing our young people learn to work together, serve others and gain confidence as they accomplished things previously thought impossible has brought me more joy than I can explain,” said Upper School teacher and Mission Trip Coordinator, Alvin Sell.

The SFCS trip to Cherokee is arranged through Mission to the World (MTW) which is an international, short-term mission organization. The amount charged by MTW includes food, lodging and support staff for our students. In addition, they provide all building materials for the various projects we will be assigned.

There will be meetings throughout this spring, and SFCS will keep you informed of additional details about the trip. Please look for further information about how you can help fund this wonderful mission in future editions of the Crusader Communiquè. If you would like specific information about the mission trip, please contact Mr. Alvin Sell at 678.5172.

SFCS Students On Their Way To A+ Certification

SFCS Junior David Jacobs

Nearly every profession has some criteria that must be met to show competence and ability. For microcomputers, that certification is called A+. The A+ Certification is accepted industry-wide as proof that those who are certified have basic competence in supporting microcomputer hardware and software. Testing for this certification is broken into two parts; Core Hardware and Operating System Technologies.

SFCS Senior Heath Whaley

SFCS Junior, David Jacobs and Senior, Heath Whaley have been working on this certification as an independent study in the Computer Lab. Both students recently passed the Core Hardware test and are preparing for the Operating System Technologies portion of this certification. This is an extensive hardware identification and configuration exam that will allow both students to become “A+ Certified Service Technicians.” Congratulations to both David and Heath for making it to the halfway mark!
