UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Monday, March 15, 2004

L to R: Susannah Ballinger,
Katherine Carter and Carolina Hopkins |
The SFCS Sophomore class
recently returned from a
memorable trip to
Charleston, South Carolina
where they toured the
historic vessels at Patriot’s Point. Their visit brought the latest study
of World War II to life. To further enhance each student’s experience
and appreciation of those who fought in the Pacific during the war, the students
spent an overnight campout on the USS Yorktown.
“The trip to Charleston
was a lot of fun and we were fortunate to be able to experience what we had
been studying in our history classes about World War II,” said student
Adam Groblewski.
The class also toured the Aquarium and viewed an Imax
presentation on coral reefs. This experience was a
perfect wrap-up of their current study
of Biology.
Junior Class Trip to Washington
D.C.
At this reading,
our SFCS Junior class is on their way back from a trip
they will not soon forget. They experienced a White
House tour and a trip to Arlington National Cemetery.
Students also took part in the Wreath Laying ceremony
at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and toured the unforgettable
Holocaust Museum. When they return, our students will
have memories from a tour of Annapolis and the memorable
vision of President Lincoln’s final night at
The Ford Theatre. They will have touched the countless
names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, walked the
monuments that represent our nation’s history
and toured the quiet, Mount Vernon home of our first
President. Look for more details of their trip in next
week’s Crusader Communiquè.
Cherokee Mission Update

Gareth Jacobs (Junior) |
To date, nearly 80 students
from SFCS will be participating in the school’s third
annual mission trip to Cherokee, North Carolina. Students
and SFCS family members will experience the pleasure
that Junior, Gareth Jacobs did as one of the 75 students
that went on the trip last year. Gareth spent the week
installing guttering on the home of an elderly Cherokee
woman. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was fun
to be with my friends every day doing something for another
person who was in need,” shared Jacobs. This
year, our students need to raise over $40,000 to fund
their
trip scheduled for Saturday, July 24, through Saturday,
July 31. These funds include food, lodging and support
staff for our students. In addition, the funds provide
all building materials for the various projects we
will be assigned. Anyone wishing to contribute or receive
information about the Cherokee Mission Trip can visit
with or call Mr. Alvin Sell at 678.5172, Mrs. Kendell
Sell at 678.5181 or Mrs. Andrea Culpepper at 678.5115.
