Math Counts at SFCS!

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Monday, March 15, 2004

SFCS was recently represented by two teams at the College of Charleston Mathmeet. The first team, Level II, was composed of Pre-calculus students, David Jacobs, Ben Van Dyke, LeeAnn Funk, Sarah Hanlin and Alex Lown. This team brought home a 5th Place finish in the state out of 62 teams who participated in the competition.

Special accolades go to Kara Staskelis who received a 2nd Place in an individual sprint. Felicia Hartmann also deserves special recognition as a 2nd Place winner in a different sprint. Thanks to these two ladies, SFCS garnered two out of the six sprint medals awarded. Heather Lee was the top scorer for the Level I team. David Jacobs and Ben Van Dyke tied for best score for the Level II team. They also had the 11th highest scores in the state. The teams also had to overcome ice and snow to get to the meet.

SFCS Mathcounts Team Scores Well in the Upstate

The SFCS Mathcounts Team recently competed against 24 teams from the Upstate. The results placed our students in 8th place out of 25 teams who participated in the competition. From a field of 256 students, our Andrew Schwendler and Keith Early placed 40 and 91 respectively as 8th Grade participants. Philip Van Dyke and John Hopkins placed 65th and 97th as first-time 7th Grade participants. The other students participating – Jennifer Hurley, Jake Scott and Montague Totten all placed in the top half of all students participating in the event.

Coming Up… 6th Grade Students to Experience Barrier Island!

Pack up those “mud pit clothes” and get ready to experience the South Carolina Coast at its best! Our SFCS 6th Grade classes will spend Monday, March 29, through Wednesday, March 31, on the annual trip to Barrier Island!

Plan to attend the Sophomore, Junior and Senior Financial Aid Seminar to be held at 6:00 p.m. in Room 103 of Building 300 on the Lower School Campus.

Experience Auburn University
The Auburn University Summer Experience 2004 Program provides academic and extracurricular programs such as architecture, band, journalism, swimming and many more areas. The camps will be held at various times during the summer. For more information log-on to: www.auburn.edu/summercamps.
