SFCS Students 3rd in State

A Message from Math Coach Harry Pohl… The seniors on the SFCS Math Team are leaving Shannon Forest on a very good note. In all of the six years that some of the the students have competed on the team, they have always been in the top 10 schools in the state at the University of South Carolina Math Meet. In their final year, these students leave behind many memories of excellence and victories. This team was on the ACSI team that was 1st in the Southeast and 2nd in the nation in Algebra II – Ben Van Dyke scored among the top students in the nation. David Jacobs was 2nd in the nation with just one error in the twenty problems he completed. Van Dyke and Jacobs were selected to represent the state on the Math Team as two of the top fifty math students. Van Dyke was the first student in SFCS history to take the American Math Invitational Math Exam and score in the top 12 out of 450 math students in the United States. Saturday, April 8, the team of Jacobs, Van Dyke, LeeAnn Funk, Earl DeLapp, Alex Lown, Robert McFarlin, Kirsty Jacobs and Andrew Schwendler took the written test at USC. Jacobs, Van Dyke and Funk worked ciphering problems individually to add to the team score. That team placed 3rd in the state in all I-A, II-A and private schools in the state. The director of the Math Meet, Dr. Murphy, called this a “tough exam.” The SFCS seniors did very well to carry on the tradition of achieving academic and athletic accolades. The challenge is now for the underclassmen to carry on that Winning Tradition! – Harry Pohl

Over 1000 students representing 76 schools from over five states met the grueling challenge of six hours of written tests and competition in individual and team sprints.

SFCS Students Recognized at State Level of Duke T.I.P. Program

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (T.I.P.) has recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and SFCS is proud to announce three of our 7th Grade students have achieved rankings allowing them to be recognized at the state level. John Absher, Michael Porter and Lauren Vaughn qualified for this honor by placing in the top 25% of the Talent Search pool.
