Shannon Forest Students Attend
Microsoft Security Summit
UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Monday, May 10, 2004

David Jacobs |
On Wednesday, May 5, Microsoft Corporation offered a Security Summit
in Atlanta, Georgia for technicians and developers.
SFCS students, Heath Whaley and David Jacobs attended the Summit as part
of their A+ Certification
training and received an important lesson on how people,
process, technology and policy all play key roles in security management.
The Summit gave
our students the opportunity to connect with security
experts to discuss what can be done to protect a
computer or network. A series of security
essential and best practices, was introduced, along
with a strategy that will insure endusers (like you
and me), follow the steps. The result
should be a reduced vulnerability to outside threats.
A Microsoft expert showcased the latest server operating
system (Microsoft Windows 2003
Server Edition) that was upgraded to address security
threats but still maintains a high level of user
flexibility.

So, what can you do to learn
more about protecting your home computer from outside
threats? Go to www.microsoft.com/protect and follow
the steps provided. Once you know
your computer is clean, never open an e-mail attachment
from a stranger or an e-mail attachment from someone
you know, unless you are sure that
the attachment is legitimate. Be kind to your friends
and family by keeping your anti-virus software
up-to-date. Most viruses can be stopped before
they start, if you have anti-virus software that
is installed and regularly updated.
Mark Mortimore,
a Senior Technologist for Microsoft, spent an
hour of personal time with Whaley and Jacobs
at the end of the Summit, offering advice on higher education
and the future
of the computing industry.
Correction!
Last week’s issue of the Crusader Communiquè announced
the 2004- 2005 Student Council Members. There was an error in that Caroline
Hopkins will serve as the Treasurer and Felicia Hartmann will hold the
position of Secretary. Our apologies and again, congratulations! The
incoming Student Council President, Gareth Jacobs had this to say of
the recent election, “I am truly honored and delighted to have
been chosen to represent Shannon Forest as next year’s Student
Body President. I would like to congratulate all of the other new student
council members on there positions. To all of those who ran and lost,
I believe every one of them was worthy and capable of that particular
position. I believe that together we can make next year the best that
it can be. ”
