Math Team Scores Four on the Honor Roll

SFCS is proud to recognize the four students of have tested their way to the 2004 American Mathematics Competition’s (AMC) 10th through 12th Grade South Carolina Honor Roll. The AMC is a national test that challenges even the best math students in each state. Sophomore, Robert McFarlin achieved the top score at SFCS for students in the 10th Grade and below. His score of 90.0 was the 18th highest in the state! 8th Grade student, Andrew Schwendler scored an 81 to make the honor roll. Junior, Ben Van Dyke topped the charts with a score that only thirty-nine other students in the state were able to beat. He also achieved the best score at SFCS in the 12th Grade and below test. Junior, David Jacobs was only 7.5 points behind Van Dyke on the test. Each of the two top students will be honored with the placement of their name, the year and the level of difficulty of their test on a plaque proudly displayed in the Upper School hallway outside of Brenda Hillman’s Office. Congratulations, SFCS Math Team members!


Freshmen and Sophomores say…ALOHA!

The freshman and sophomore classes will celebrate the end of the school year with a Hawaiian-themed dance. Students will gather outside in the courtyard between the Upper School Gymnasium and Upper School Building on Friday, May 21, from 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. The dance is for freshman and sophomores only, but other juniors and seniors may attend if they have a date form filled out and turned in to Mrs. Powell by the day of the dance.


Senior Class Hits the Big Apple!

SFCS seniors will celebrate the end of their school year and SFCS experience with a trip to New York City on Friday, May 21, through Tuesday, May 25. Our seniors will visit Times Square and enjoy shopping and sightseeing in Manhattan. They will also take in a play at the St. James Theater, marvel at the view atop the Empire State Building and attend a Mets baseball game. Other points of interest they will tour are Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the United Nations Building and the site of the World Trade Center.


Take Advantage of the SAT Preparation Class!

SFCS students have a great opportunity to prepare themselves for taking the SAT! Mr. Bill Pell, a veteran educator for 34 years, most recently a teacher and Chairman of the English Department at Spartanburg High School, will share his 22 years of SAT preparation experience with our students. The SAT Preparation Program is available to SFCS students on Monday, July 19 through Friday, July 23.

Monday, July 19 – Thursday, July 22: 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Friday, July 23: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Students will have time for lunch and a break. No homework will be assigned. All work is done during class time. The cost is $250 plus a $35 materials fee. To register, please call Marti Spencer at 675.6393. Deadline for registration is Thursday, June 10.


Middle School Drama: Students & Orchestra to Perform

The SFCS Middle School Drama students and our orchestra will entertain 1st through 5th Grade students on Thursday, May 20, in the SFPC Sanctuary at 1:30 p.m. The dramaperformance will include mime routines with a Christian message and a short puppet skit.


SFCS to Offer Summer Math Enrichment Courses

Once again, SFCS Math teacher, Harry Pohl will be offering summer Math enrichment courses for interested students. Classes will be held on the following dates:

Monday, July 19, through Friday, July 23, and Monday, July 26, through Friday, July 30

Course of study and class times:
Introduction to Geometry 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Introduction to Algebra I 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Pre-Algebra Advanced 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon
Rising 5th and 6th Grade students 12 noon – 1:00 p.m.
Introduction to Algebra II 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Cost
1 week enrichment course $ 50
2 week enrichment course $100
Private tutoring $ 25 per hour

All classes will be held in Room 102 of the Upper School Building. If you are interested in any of these courses, please contact Harry Pohl.

Make note of these important points:
• Please note that all 7th-11th Grade students will be on a ½ day exam schedule.
• There will be no early dismissals during exams. No students are allowed to leave the class after finishing the exam.
• Students will be given a pass if they need to use the restroom.
• Students who do not have an exam scheduled are excused during that period and may leave the premises. Any student who remains on campus must be in class.
• 6th Grade students do not take final exams. They will run a regular schedule on Tuesday, May 25, and Wednesday, May 26, 6th Grade students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, and Friday, May 28.


7th & 8th Grade Students Celebrate Summer!
Beach Bash >

Looking forward to a FUN summer at the beach, SFCS 7th & 8th Grade students celebrated the warm weather, sunshine and the fact that there is only two more weeks of school at an end-of-the-year Beach Bash last Friday night.


Musical Notes

SFCS Orchestra to Perform Spring Concert SFCS Orchestra students will perform sacred pieces, folk songs, classical music and pop selections like Batman and 007 in an upcoming spring concert. Both the Beginning and Intermediate Orchestra will perform on Tuesday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the SFPC Sanctuary.
