SFCS Middle School Volleyball Ends Season of Progress and Improvement
October 17, 2011- The Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS) Middle School Volleyball team entered into the CMSC Tournament as a seventh place seed playing against a very solid 2nd place seed St. Joseph's on Tuesday, October 11. As an improved team filled with great expectation, the Crusaders were ready to play. SFCS started the first game tight and nervous while St. Joseph's took an early lead of 4-12. The Crusaders did not go away quietly. They began to show composure and their competiveness by scratching their way to a tie game. The rally was not enough to boost Shannon Forest to a win and the first game went to St. Joseph's. While emotions continued to soar, the Crusaders scuffled with the Knights point for point in a very intense game two. The Crusaders played their best match of the season, but could not emerge the victor. The Knights scored the victory 25-22 in both games. Lauren Jones led the team with 4 service points, 2 kills, and and 1 ace. Caroline Knight had 2 service points and 2 kills. Carlee Chacknes had 1 service point, 1 ace and 2 kills. Lily Reid had 1 ace, 4 kills, and 2 assists. Maddison Harkey had 2 service points, 1 ace and 1 kill. Britney Lee had 1 service point, 2 aces, and a kill.
Twelve players from eight conference teams were chosen this year as CMSC All Conference players. Lady Crusader Caroline Knight was selected as a 2011 All-Conference Player.
"This season began with no returning starters from the previous season so inexperience would be a factor to overcome," said SFCS Head Coach Jayne Johnson. "These players committed to working hard each week and showed much improvement throughout the year," added Johnson. "We finished the season with a record of 8-12. I am very proud of these young ladies and look forward to seeing their accomplishments in the future on and off the court."
The team will say goodbye to 8th Grade players Mara Braasch, Carlee Chacknes, Maddison Harkey, Lauren Jones, Caroline Knight, GarceAnne Stokes, and Laura Wellons as they will be moving up to Junior Varsity next year. The Middle School Lady Crusaders will have 8 returning players who will only improve in their volleyball skill and development from this year. " Even though we will be losing 7 players in which 4 were starters, we will begin the 2012 season with more experience with the return of starters Britney Lee and Lily Reid along with Caroline Baughman who split time on the floor with another starter as well as other young talent emerging from the sixth grade class. I look forward to a successful future."
